How to Get Rid of Ants Naturally

Spraying the ants you can see is the wrong move. It kills foragers and the colony simply sends more. What works is bait they carry home.

Why spraying backfires

The ants visible on your counter are a small fraction of the colony — often 1–10%. Kill them and the colony loses foragers, so it produces more. You also destroy the pheromone trail that would have led you to the nest.

Follow the trail first. Watch where they go for a full five minutes. The entry point is usually a crack, a pipe penetration, or the gap under a skirting board.

What actually works

1. Borax bait (the most effective)

Borax is slow-acting, which is exactly why it works: foragers carry it back and feed the colony before dying. Mix:

Or for protein-eating ants: 1 part borax to 3 parts peanut butter.

Critical: keep the borax concentration low. Too strong and the foragers die before reaching the nest. Put bait in a shallow dish or a pierced container so pets and children cannot reach it.

Expect 1–2 weeks. You will see more ants at first — that is the point.

2. Diatomaceous earth

Food-grade DE abrades the ants' waxy coating and they dehydrate. Dust it in cracks, along thresholds and around foundations. It must stay dry to work — useless in damp areas.

Wear a mask when applying; the dust is a respiratory irritant.

3. Sealing entry points

After baiting, seal the cracks with silicone or caulk. This is the step people skip, and it is what stops the next colony.

4. Vinegar and soap sprays

Useful for wiping trails — vinegar destroys the pheromone path. But they kill only the ants they touch and do nothing to the colony. Treat them as cleanup, not control.

What does not work

Keep them from coming back

When to call a professional

If you have carpenter ants (large, black, sawdust piles), or ants nesting inside wall cavities, baiting rarely solves it. Structural damage is a real risk.

Common questions

What kills ants naturally and permanently?

Borax bait at a low concentration. The foragers carry it back and feed the colony, which is the only way to kill the nest rather than the visible ants.

Does vinegar kill ants?

It kills the ants it touches and destroys their pheromone trails, but it has no effect on the colony. Use it for cleanup after baiting.

How long does borax bait take?

One to two weeks. You will see more ants at first, which means the bait is being taken back to the nest.

Is diatomaceous earth safe around pets?

Food-grade DE is low toxicity but is a respiratory irritant. Apply it in cracks where pets cannot disturb it, and wear a mask.
