Natural Remedies for a Sore Throat
Most sore throats are viral and settle in 3–7 days. These remedies reduce the pain while that happens. A few warning signs mean you should not wait.
What works best, in order
1. Salt water gargle
The cheapest and one of the best-supported. Half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle 30 seconds, spit, repeat up to four times a day. It reduces swelling in the throat tissue directly.
2. Honey
Honey outperformed a common cough medicine in trials for night-time throat pain and cough. One to two teaspoons, straight or in warm (not boiling) water. Not for babies under one year — infant botulism risk.
3. Warm liquids
Tea, broth or just warm water with lemon. Warmth increases blood flow and soothes; hydration thins mucus. This is not folk wisdom — it is measurable pain relief.
4. Marshmallow root
A mucilage herb that coats irritated tissue. It needs a cold infusion: 1–2 teaspoons of dried root in cold water for 4–6 hours. Hot water destroys the soothing compounds.
5. Thyme
Traditionally used for throat and cough. One teaspoon of dried leaf per cup, covered, steeped 10 minutes. Thymol is the active component and it is also why thyme appears in mouthwashes.
6. Sage gargle
A traditional gargle with reasonable trial support for throat pain. Steep 1 teaspoon of dried sage in hot water 10 minutes, cool, gargle. Do not use sage in large amounts if pregnant.
What helps less than people think
- Lemon alone — the acid can irritate an already raw throat. Fine in tea, harsh neat.
- Apple cider vinegar — no evidence, and it burns.
- Essential oils swallowed — dangerous. Never swallow undiluted essential oil.
- Antibiotics — useless for viral sore throats, which are most of them.
See a doctor if
- Difficulty swallowing your own saliva, or drooling
- Difficulty breathing
- One-sided severe swelling, or a muffled "hot potato" voice
- Fever above 38.5°C / 101°F lasting more than 3 days
- A rash, or a throat that has lasted more than a week
- White patches on the tonsils with fever — possible strep, which needs testing
Common questions
How often can you gargle salt water?
Up to four times a day. More than that can dry and irritate the throat.
Does honey really work for a sore throat?
Yes — it has beaten placebo and a common cough syrup in trials for night-time symptoms. It is a coating and mild antimicrobial effect, not a cure.
What is the fastest remedy?
Salt water gargle plus honey. Both act within minutes, and both are cheap.
Can you use these for children?
Salt water gargle and warm liquids from about age 6, if they can gargle without swallowing. No honey under one year. No sage or essential oils for young children.
